VAAE STUDENT ARTS SCHOLARSHIPS

Bailey, Depatie, Leslie, Stockman Receive VAAE Arts Scholarships

In cooperation with the Vermont Student Assistance Corporation, the Vermont Alliance for Arts Education presented four Vermont students with arts scholarships. Each student received $500.00 to go toward college expenses.

Visual Art recipient, Dylan A. Bailey, a Burr and Burton Academy graduate plans to major in Art/Illustration at the Rhode Island School of Design. Vocalist, Kimberly R. Depatie, a graduate of Missisquoi Valley Union High School has entered Maryville College to study church  music. Forrest "Woody" L. Leslie, a graduate of Hazen Union High School, plans to major in music/ethnomusicology at Wesleyan University. The fourth recipient, Benjamin M. Stockman, a multitalented music, drama and film student plans to pursue film studies at Emerson College.

The generous donation of time and resources of VAAE Board members and staff, Rebecca Carleton, Andrea Haulenbeek, Diane Kemble, Alan Jordan, Elizabeth Miller, Claire Oglesby, and Anne Taylor made the VAAE scholarships possible. Board members sponsored dinners, a brunch, and an art auction with all proceeds going to the scholarship fund.

Future fundraising events are being planned to support future scholarships. An Arts Scholarship Raffle will be held at the fall arts education conference, September 28th and 29th. At publication time, Chair Diane Kemble had over 25 items and seeks more from arts supporters. Please contact Diane if you wish to donate a raffle item.

VAAE/VSAC Spring 2004 Scholarship Recipients
Vocal Music Recipient, Kimberly R. Depatie Having grown up in a Christian atmosphere, Kimberly plans to pursue a career that combines Christian ministry and music, such as being a Christian vocalist, church choirmaster, or choral singer.

Two events have lead Kimberly to making her career choice, the Vermont Youth Congress, a retreat for Vermont's Catholic teens and the New England Music Festival, which brought her into contact with dedicated and passionate musicians. It helped her to discover that she could send a message to the world through choral and Christian music.

While at Missisquoi Valley UHS, Kimberly served on the Student Council, participated in the Madrigal, District, All State and New England Music Festivals, was inducted into the National Honor Society, Who's Who Among American High School Students and received numerous awards for outstanding academic achievement. She was valedictorian of the MVUHS Class of 2004. Kimberly was also an active community volunteer, serving over 100 hours in community service during her high school years. She is continuing her education at Maryville College in Tennessee.

Visual Art Recipient, Dylan A. Bailey Multi talented artist, Dylan Bailey has traveled to the distant lands of Nepal, India, and Tibet and paddled all over the Northeast in expeditions to Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire and Massachusetts and won several awards on the New England White Water Racing circuit.

While in high school, Dylan designed and oversaw the production of all the scenery for Fame and exhibited his artwork at the Southern Vermont Art Center. He received commendations for his artwork at the Congressional Art Competition sponsored by Senator Jeffords. Voted "Most Artistic" by his classmates, Dylan will pursue his passion for art at the Rhode Island School of Design.

In his senior year, Dylan did a semester abroad in Nepal, India, and Tibet where he did internships with native artisans. While in Nepal, Dylan developed his photography skills and made a photo essay of the people of Nepal. He also traveled to art museums while aboard to gain inspirations for his own art.

In addition to his passion for the arts, Dylan has a strong interest in outdoor education and environment conservation. For the past four years he has worked with an outdoor education group, Kroka Expeditions, which teaches wilderness skills and environmental awareness to students of all ages. Not only did he learn the technical and rescue skills needed in white water with kayak and canoe, but also helped others to develop these skills.

Theatre Recipient, Ben Stockman. Having been in many theatrical productions including shows at Brattleboro UHS, the New England Youth Theatre, the Vermont Theatre Company, the Village Theater and single performances at the Sandglass Theatre and at the Vermont Renaissance Festival and doing voice work for the National Marionette Theater, Ben Stockman seeks to study film studies at Emerson College in Boston.

Though theatre is a love of Ben's, he was extremely active in Brattleboro UHS Music department programs: singing with the chorus and a cappella group, the BUHS Madrigals. Also, he founded a cappella singing group, the Shoulder Narrows. Having sung in the District Chorus festival, the District Jazz Choir, the Vermont All State Chorus and the All New England Chorus, Ben's musical talent lead him to secure leading roles in BUHS musicals Les Miserables, School Edition and The Wiz.

Instrumental Music Recipient, Forrest "Woody" Leslie Woody, a native of Hardwick, Vermont, was taken over by the power of music early on in his life when he started on his first instrument, the flutophone, in third grade. Though he has long since given up the flutophone, he has picked up many other instruments including trumpet, sitar, tabla, piano, voice and any other instrument he can get his hands on. In the fall he will be attending Wesleyan University in Connecticut to study music, and hopes to go on to study ethnomusicology.
